わたしは何よりも数学が好きだった。論拠の確実性と明証性のゆえである。しかしまだ，その本当の用途に気づいていなかった。数学が機械技術にしか役立っていないことを考え，数学の基礎はあれほど揺るぎなく堅固なのに，もっと高い学問が何もその上に築かれなかったのを意外に思った。 これと反対に，習俗を論じた古代異教徒たちの書物は，いとも壮麗で豪華ではあるが，砂や泥の上に築かれたにすぎない楼閣のょうなものであった。かれらは美徳をひどく高く持ち上げて，この世の何よりも尊重すべきものと見せかける。けれども美徳をどう認識するかは十分に教えないし，かれらが美徳という美しい名で呼ぶものが，無感動・散漫・絶望・親族殺しにすぎないことが多い。
I was especially delighted with the Mathematics,
on account of the certitude and evidence
of their reasonings: but I had not as yet
a precise knowledge of their true use; and
thinking that they but contributed to the
advancement of the mechanical arts, I was
astonished that foundations, so strong and
solid, should have had no loftier superstructure
reared on them. On the other hand, I compared
the disquisitions of the ancient Moralists
to very towering and magnificent palaces
with no better foundation than sand and mud:
had laud the virtues very highly, and exhibit
them as estimable far above anything on earth;
but they give us no adequate criterion of
virtue, and frequently that which they designate
with so fine a name is but apathy, or pride,
or despair, or parricide.
