ALL STATES, all powers, that have held and
hold rule over men have been and are either
republics or principalities.
Principalities are either hereditary, in
which the family has been long established;
or they are new.
The new are either entirely new, as was Milan
to Francesco Sforza, or they are, as it were,
members annexed to the hereditary state of
the prince who has acquired them, as was
the kingdom of Naples to that of the King
of Spain.
Such dominions thus acquired are either accustomed
to live under a prince, or to live in freedom;
and are acquired either by the arms of the
prince himself, or of others, or else by
fortune or by ability.
第１章 何種類の君主国があるのか，それらはどういう手段で獲得されたか
人民をこれまで支配した，また今支配している，あらゆる国家，あらゆる権力は，共和国か君主国のどちらかです。
君主国は，一族が長い間不動のものとしてきた世襲のものか，新興の君主国のどちらかです。
新興の君主国は，フランチェスコ・スフォルツァのものとなったミラノのような完全に新興の君主国と，スペイン王の手中に落ちたナポリ王国のように，もともと君主国であったものが，それを獲得した君主の世襲国の付属物となったもののいずれかです。
こうして獲得された領土は，君主のもとで生きることに順応していたものか，自由に生きることに順応していたものかのいずれかであり，そしてそれは，君主自身の武力によってか他の者の武力によって獲得されるか，そうでなければ，運や才能によって獲得されるかのどちらかなのです。
