The Objects of Love　　　愛の対象

Love is not primarily a relationship to a specific person;

もともと，愛とは特定の人間に対する関係をいうものではない。

it is an attitude, an orientation of character which determines the relatedness of a person to the world as a whole, not toward one "object" of love.

それは一つの態度，すなわち性格の方向性であり，ある人がある愛の対象に対してではなく，全体としての世界と関係するその仕方を決定するものである。

If a person loves only one other person and is indifferent to the rest of his fellow men,

もし人が他のひとりの人のみを愛し，そしてほかの仲間には冷淡であるというのであれば，

his love is not love but a symbiotic attachment, or an enlarged egotism.

その愛は愛ではなく，共棲的な愛着であるか，あるいは拡大された自己中心主義にすぎないのである。

Yet, most people believe that love is constituted by the object, not by the faculty.

しかし，大部分の人びとは，愛とはその能力によってではなく対象によって成り立つものであると信じている。

In fact, they even believe that it is a proof of the intensity of their love when they do not love anybody except the "loved" person.

実際，彼らは，自分たちが《愛した》人間を除いては誰をも愛さない，というのが自分たちの愛の強さの証拠であるというふうに信じていさえする。

This is the same fallacy which we have already mentioned above.

これはわれわれがすでに上に述べてきたと同じことであり，誤謬である。

Because one does not see that love is an activity, a power of the soul,

なぜならばこのとき人は，愛は活動であり，精神の力であることを理解していないからである。

one believes that all that is necessary to find is the right object--and that everything goes by itself afterward.

必要なのは正しい対象を見出すことだけである--そして他のことはすべてその背後に退くものだ−−ということを信じているからである。

This attitude can be compared to that of a man who wants to paint but who, instead of learning the art, claims that he has just to wait for the right object, and that he will paint beautifully when he finds it.

この態度は，画を描きたいときには，技術を学ぶかわりに，正しい対象を得なければならない，そしてそれを見出しさえすれば美しく描けるだろうと主張する人に比べることができる。

If I truly love one person I love all persons, I love the world, I love life.

もしも私が，真にひとりの人を愛するならば，私はすべての人を愛し，世界を愛し，生命を愛するのである。

If I can say to somebody else, "I love you,"

もしもわたしが，誰かに「あなたを愛する」といえるならば，

I must be able to say, "I love in you everybody, I love through you the world, I love in you also myself."

「私はあなたたちの誰をも愛する，私はあなたを通して世界を愛する，私はあなたを愛し，また私自身を愛するのだ」といえなければならないはずなのである。
