One cause for neurotic development can lie in the fact that a boy has a loving, but overindulgent or domineering mother, and a weak and uninterested father.

神経症の発呈のひとつの原因として，愛情はあるがわがままであるとか，または権力を振うような母親を持ち，他方に，弱くて冷淡な父を持つという事実がある。

In this case he may remain fixed at an early mother attachment,

この場合には，その子供は，幼少期の母の愛着に固定されたままに留まっていることになる。

and develop into a person who is dependent on mother, feels helpless, has the strivings characteristic of the receptive person,

母親に依存し，無力を感じ，受容的な人間の特徴である渇望，

that is, to receive, to be protected, to be taken care of,

とりもなおさす受けること，保護されること，愛護してもらうことへの渇望を持ち，

and who has a lack of fatherly qualities--discipline, independence, an ability to master life by himself.

そして父親らしい性質--訓練・独立・さらに自分自身によい生活を習熟するという能力において欠けたところのある人間として発達することになる。

He may try to find "mothers" in everybody, sometimes in women and sometimes in men in a position of authority and power.

そして，彼はあらゆる人の中に，たとえば，ある時には女たちの中に，またある時には権威と力の位置にある男たちのうちに《母親》を見出そうと試みるだろう。

If, on the other hand, the mother is cold, unresponsive and domineering,

反対に，もしも母親が冷たく，同情がなく，権力を振うようであれば，

he may either transfer the need for motherly protection to his father, and subsequent father figures---

彼は母親らしい保護を求める欲求を，自分の父に向って転移し，そしてそれに通ったような父の像を見出そうとするか--

in which case the end result is similar to the former case--

この場合にも究極の結果は前者の場合に似ている--

or he will develop into a onesidedly father-oriented person, completely given to the principles of law, order and authority, and lacking in the ability to expect or to receive unconditional love.

あるいは，完全に法律，秩序，権威の原理に従いはするが，無条件的な愛を期待し，それを受け入れる能力が欠如しており，一方的に父親に方向づけられた人間として発達するようになるであろう。

This development is further intensified if the father is authoritarian and at the same time strongly attached to the son.

この発達は，もし父親が権威主義者であり，同時に息子に強く愛着するというときには，いっそう強められてゆくであろう。

What is characteristic of all these neurotic developments is the fact that one principle, the fatherly or the motherly, fails to develop or--and this is the case in the more severe neurotic development--

すべてのこれらの神経症的発達の特徴となるものは，父親あるいは母親の原則の一方が発達してないという事実，あるいは--より重症な神経症的な発達をするときにみられる事実であるが--

that the roles of mother and father become confused both with regard to persons outside and with regard to these roles within the person.

母親と父親との役割が，現実の人に関しても，また，その人の内部におけるこれらの役割に関しても，混乱してしまうという事実である。

Further examination may show that certain types of neurosis, like obsessional neurosis, develop more on the basis of a one-sided father attachment,

いっそう深く調査すれば，強迫神経症のような神経症のある形では，ー方的な父親愛着の基礎の上に発達するし，

while others, like hysteria, alcoholism, inability to assert oneself and to cope with life realistically, and depressions, result from mother-centeredness.

他方，ヒステリー，アルコール中毒，自説を主張する能力あるいは生活を現実的に展望する能力の欠如，抑磯などは母親中心性から生ずるということが認められるだろう。
