Is love an art?

愛って，技術なの？

Then it requires knowledge and effort.

技術であるなら，愛するためには知識と努力とが必要ね。

Or is love a pleasant sensation, which to experience is a matter of chance, something one "falls into" if one is lucky?

それとも愛とは，快い感じに過ぎず，それを経験すると否とは，機会如何に関わるもの，幸運にさえ恵まれれば，きっとその中に「おちこむ」ようなものかしら？

This little book is based on the former premise,

この小著は，愛とは技術であるとする前者の見解に立っているよ。

while undoubtedly the majority of people today believe in the latter.

でも，今の人の大半は，後者の意見を持っていることは，疑いないようね。
