When man is born,

he is thrown out of a situation which was definite, as definite as the instincts, into a situation which is indefinite, uncertain and open.

本能がそうであったと同じような決定された状況から，未決定な，不確実な，そして開かれた状況の中へと投げやられている。

There is certainty only about the past --

確かなのは，過去についてのみ。--

and about the future only as far as that it is death.

未来についての確かなことと言えば，人間は死ぬということだけ。
