Man is gifted with reason;

人間は理性をさずけられている。

he is life being aware of itself;

人間は，自分自身を知っている生命だね。

he has awareness of himself, of his fellow man,

彼自身と仲間を，

of his past, and of the possibilities of his future.

自分の過去を，自分の未来の可能性を知っている。

This awareness of himself as a separate entity,

このように，他から分離した実在者としての自分自身を知っていること，

the awareness of his own short life span,

自分の生命が束の間の短いものであることを知っていること，

of the fact that without his will he is born and against his will he dies,

自分の意志ではなしに生まれ，自分の意志に反して死ぬということを知り，

that he will die before those whom he loves, or they before him,

自分が愛する者よりも先に，あるいは愛するものが自分よりも先に死ぬだろうという事実を知っていること，

the awareness of his aloneness and separateness,

彼が孤独であること，分離されていること，

of his helplessness before the forces of nature and of society,

自然や社会の力の前に助けるものもないままにおかれていることを知っていること，

all this makes his separate, disunited existence an unbearable prison.

これらのすべてが，他から分離され，ばらばらにされた人間の実存を耐えがたい牢獄としてしまう。

He would become insane

彼は発狂してしまう。

could he not liberate himself from this prison and reach out,

もしも，人間がこの牢獄から解放されず，外に出られず，

unite himself in some form or other with men, with the world outside.

また自分自身を，この形式であるいはあの形式ででも良いけど，人々に，とりもなおさず，外なる世界に合一させることができないなら，
