With the growing development of culture, the group enlarges;

it becomes the citizenry of a polis, the citizenry of a large state, the members of a church.

それはポリスの市民，大きな州の市民，教会のメンバーとなる。

Even the poor Roman felt pride because he could say "civis romanus sum".

貧しいローマ人さえ「われはローマ人なり」ということができることに誇りを感じたという。

Rome and the Empire were his family, his home, his world.

ローマとその帝国は彼の家族であり，彼の家庭であり，彼の世界であったのである。

Also in contemporary Western society the union with the group is the prevalent way of overcoming separateness.

また，現代の西欧の社会においては，グループとの合一は分離を克服する上の普通の方法なのである。

It is a union in which the individual self disappears to a large extent, and where the aim is to belong to the herd.

しかし，それは個人の自我が広範にわたって消え，そして自分の目的が民衆に従属しているというような合一なのである。

If I am like everybody else, if I have no feelings or thoughts which make me different, if I conform in custom, dress, ideas, to the pattern of the group, I am saved;

もし，私が他のみんなと同じであり，私を他者から異ならせるような感情あるいは思考を持たず，自分の習慣や服装や思想を迎合させ，グループのパターンに一致させるならば，私は救われるのである。

saved from the frightening experience of aloneness.

私は孤独という脅威的な経験を持つことから救われる。

The dictatorial systems use threats and terror to induce this conformity;

独裁的な組織では，この迎合的な一致に導くために，脅しと恐怖とを用いる。

the democratic countries, suggestion and propaganda.

民主的な国では示唆と宣伝とを用いる。

There is, indeed, one great difference between the two systems.

このふたつの組織の間には，実際には非常に大きな差があるのである。

In the democracies non-conformity is possible and, in fact, by no means entirely absent;

民主主義においては，不一致は可能であり，まったく不一致がなくなることは，実際にはない。

in the totalitarian systems, only a few unusual heroes and martyrs can be expected to refuse obedience.

全体主義の組織においては，ごく少数の特別の英雄と殉教者にのみ服従を拒絶することが期待されるにすぎない。

But in spite of this difference the democratic societies show an overwhelming degree of conformity.

しかしこのような違いがあるにもかかわらず，民主的な社会では圧倒的な同調がみられる。

The reason lies in the fact that there has to be an answer to the quest for union,

その理由は，そこでは合一に対する追求への答えがなければならないし，

and if there is no other or better way,

そして，もしも他の方法あるいはよりよい方法がないとなると，

then the union of herd conformity becomes the predominant one.

その時には，民衆への同調という形の合一は有力なものとなるという事実の中にあるのである。

One can only understand the power of the fear to be different, the fear to be only a few steps away from the herd, if one understands the depths of the need not to be separated.

もし分離されたくないという要求がいかに深いかを知るならば，他者と異なることを恐れる力，民衆からたった数歩離れていることを恐れる力を理解することができるであろう。

Sometimes this fear of non-conformity is rationalized as fear of practical dangers which could threaten the non-conformist.

時として，この不同調への恐れは，不同課者を脅かすところの実際の危険に対する恐れだとして合理化される。

But actually, people want to conform to a much higher degree than they are forced to conform, at least in the Western democracies.

しかし，実際には，少なくとも西洋の民主主義においては，人びとは同調するように強いられるその度合よりも，より以上にみずから同調したいとのぞんでいるのである。
