In contemporary capitalistic society the meaning of equality has been transformed.

現代の資本主義的社会においては，平等の意味は変化している。

By equality one refers to the equality of automatons; of men who have lost their individuality.

ここで云々される平等は，自動人形の平等，個性を失った人びとの平等である。

Equality today means "sameness," rather than "oneness."

平等は，今日では《一体性》よりも《同一》を意味する。

It is the sameness of abstractions, of the men who work in the same jobs, who have the same amusements, who read the same newspapers, who have the same feelings and the same ideas.

それは同じところに働き，同じ娯楽を持ち，同じ新聞を読み，同じ感情と同じ考えを持つ人びとの同一性，抽象の同一性である。

In this respect one must also look with some skepticism at some achievements which are usually praised as signs of our progress, such as the equality of women.

この点においては，われわれは男女の平等のような，いつもわれわれが進歩したことのしるしとして賞讃されているいくつかの成果についても，ある程度の懐疑をもって見ていなければならないのである。

The polarity of the sexes is disappearing, and with it erotic love, which is based on this polarity.

性という両極性は消失し，それとともにこの極性にもとづくエロチックの愛も消失する。

Men and women become the same, not equals as opposite poles.

男と女は同じであり，ただ反対の極として等しくないだけなのである。

Contemporary society preaches this ideal of unindividualized equality

現代社会はこの非個性化された平等の理想を説く。

because it needs human atoms, each one the same, to make them function in a mass aggregation, smoothly, without friction; all obeying the same commands, yet everybody being convinced that he is following his own desires.

なぜならば，現代社会は，どれもこれもが同じであるアトム的人間を要求し，それらを大集団の中で，円滑に，摩擦なしに働かせることを要求するからである。

Just as modern mass production requires the standardization of commodities,

すべてが同じ命令に従いながら，しかも，それぞれの人間は自分自身の欲望に従っていると確信させられているのである。

so the social process requires standardization of man,

ちょうど，近代の大量生産が商品の標準化を要求するように，社会過程は人間の標準化を要求しているのである。

and this standardization is called "equality."

そしてこの標準化が《平等》と呼ばれているのである。
