貧しい人が金持よりもすすんで与えるということはよく知られている。

そうはいっても，ある点を越える貧困は，与えることを不可能にさせるであろう。

and is so degrading, not only because of the suffering it causes directly, but because of the fact that it deprives the poor of the joy of giving.

貧困は，それが直接にひき起す苦しみのゆえにばかりでなく，与えることの喜びを貧しい人から取り上げるという事実のゆえにこそ，人を賎しめるのである。
