That love implies care is most evident in a mother's love for her child.

愛に配慮が含まれることは，子供に対する母親の愛においてもっとも明らかにみられる。

No assurance of her love would strike us as sincere if we saw her lacking in care for the infant, if she neglected to feed it, to bathe it, to give it physical comfort;

もしも，幼児を十分に愛護しない母親を見たようなとき，また，その母親が幼児にお乳を呑ませ，湯を使わせ，身体を気持よくしてやることを怠っているようなときには，その女性の愛についてどんな保証を与えられても，われわれは真実な愛として打たれることはないだろう。

and we are impressed by her love if we see her caring for the child.

これに反して，子供をよく世話している女性を見たとすればその愛によって打たれるであろう。

It is not different even with the love for animals or flowers.

このことは動物や花への変について語るときもかわりはない。

If a woman told us that she loved flowers, and we saw that she forgot to water them, we would not believe in her "love" for flowers.

もし，ある婦人が花を愛しているとロではいっても，その花に水をやるのを忘れているのを見たとするならば，われわれは彼女が花を愛しているということを信じないであろう。

Love is the active concern for the life and the growth of that which we love.

愛とは愛するものの生命と成長に積極的に関係することなのである。

Where this active concern is lacking, there is no love.

この積極的な関係が欠けているところにはいかなる愛もありえない。

This element of love has been beautifully described in the book of Jonah.

愛のこの要素はヨナ書の中に美しく描かれている。

God has told Jonah to go to Nineveh to warn its inhabitants that they will be punished unless they mend their evil ways.

神はヨナに，ニネべの住民のもとにいって，彼らが悪行を改めなければ罰せられるであろうと警告するように命じた。

Jonah runs away from his mission because he is afraid that the people of Nineveh will repent and that God will forgive them.

ヨナはニネべの人びとが悔い改めて，神が彼らを宥すような結末になることを恐れて，その伝道から逃げた。

He is a man with a strong sense of order and law, but without love.

彼は強い秩序と律法の感覚を持った人間ではあるが，愛のない人だったのである。

However, in his attempt to escape, he finds himself in the belly of a whale, symbolizing the state of isolation and imprisonment which his lack of love and solidarity has brought upon him.

しかしながら，彼は逃れようとしているうちに，自分自身がくじらの腹の中に呑み込まれているのに気づいた。このことは彼の愛と友愛の欠如が，彼にもたらしたところの隔離と牢獄の状態を象徴しているのである。

God saves him, and Jonah goes to Nineveh.

神は彼を救った。そこでヨナはニネべに行った。

He preaches to the inhabitants as God had told him,

彼は神が告げたことをニネべの住民に説教した。

and the very thing he was afraid of happens.

すると，彼が恐れていたまさにその事が起ったのである。

The men of Nineveh repent their sins, mend their ways,

ニネべの人びとは罪を悔い改め，自分たちの方法を改めた。

and God forgives them and decides not to destroy the city.

神は彼らを宥し，あえて町を壊すことをしなかった。

Jonah is intensely angry and disappointed;

ヨナは強く怒り，失望した。

he wanted "justice" to be done, not mercy.

彼は慈悲ではなく《正義》が行われることを望んだのである。

At last he finds some comfort in the shade of a tree which God had made to grow for him to protect him from the sun.

最後に彼は，彼を太陽から譲るために神が茂らせた木の影で，どうにか苦痛をのがれていた。

But when God makes the tree wilt,

しかし神が木をしおれさせると，

Jonah is depressed and angrily complains to God.

ヨナは気おちし，怒って不平をいった。

God answers: "Thou hast had pity on the gourd for the which thou hast not labored neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.

そのとき神は「君は労せず，育てず，一夜に生じて一夜に亡びたトウゴマを惜しんだ。

And should I not spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand people that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?"

まして左右を弁えぬ12万あまりの者と，あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネべを惜しまずにいられようか」と答えるのである。

God's answer to Jonah is to be understood symbolically.

神のヨナへの答は象徴的に理解さるべきものである。

God explains to Jonah that the essence of love is to "labor" for something and "to make something grow," that love and labor are inseparable.

神はヨナに，愛の本質はなにかのために《働き》，そして《なにかを育てること》であるということ，愛と労働とは不可分のものであるということを説き明しているのである。

One loves that for which one labors, and one labors for that which one loves.

人は手に入れようと願って働くものを愛するし，また人は愛するもののために働くのである。
