Knowledge has one more, and a more fundamental, relation to the problem of love.

While life in its merely biological aspects is a miracle and a secret,

単に生物学的局面からみても生命は奇跡であり，神秘であるけれども，

man in his human aspects is an unfathomable secret to himself--and to his fellow man.

その人間的なものとしての局面からみたヒトは，彼自身にとって−−そしてまた彼の仲間にとっても，測りがたい神秘なのである。

We know ourselves,

われわれは，われわれ自身を知っている。

and yet even with all the efforts we may make, we do not know ourselves.

それにもかかわらず，われわれの努力のすべてをもってしても，まだわれわれ自身を知りぬいてはいないのである。

We know our fellow man, and yet we do not know him,

われわれは仲間を知っているが，それでもわれわれは彼を知ってはいないのである。

because we are not a thing, and our fellow man is not a thing.

なぜならば，われわれは物ではなく，われわれの仲間のひとびとも物ではないからだ。

The further we reach into the depth of our being, or someone else's being, the more the goal of knowledge eludes us.

われわれが，われわれのあるいは他の誰かの存在の深みに到達しようとすればするほど，知識の目標はいっそうわれわれから遠ざかってしまう。

Yet we cannot help desiring to penetrate into the secret of man's soul, into the innermost nucleus which is "he."

しかし，われわれは人間の魂の神秘に，すなわち《彼》であるところのもっとも内なる中核に入ってゆくことを望まざるをえない。
