The relationship to father is quite different.

父親への関係はこれとはまったく異なっている。

Mother is the home we come from,

母親は我々が生まれてくる家庭である。

she is nature, soil, the ocean;

彼女は自然であり，大地であり，大洋である。

father does not represent any such natural home.

父親にはそのような自然的な家庭を意味するものはない。

He has little connection with the child in the first years of its life,

子供は生まれてから数年の間は，父親とはほとんどなんの関係をも持たない。

and his importance for the child in this early period cannot be compared with that of mother.

この幼児期の児童に対する重要さという点では，父親は母親とは比較できるものではない。

But while father does not represent the natural world,

父親は自然的な世界を表わしてはいない。

he represents the other pole of human existence;

しかし，彼は人間存在の他の極を表わしている。

the world of thought, of man-made things, of law and order, of discipline, of travel and adventure.

思想，人間の造った事物，法律と秩序，訓練，旅行と冒険の世界を表わしている。

Father is the one who teaches the child, who shows him the road into the world.

父親とは，子供を教える人であり，彼に世界への道を示す人。
