he cannot develop a more mature love for God;

人間は発達の結果として，より成熟した神への愛にまで達することはできないのである。

then his religion is that of the earlier phase of religion,

そのときには，その人びとの宗教は，初期の段階のままのものであり，

in which God was experienced as an all-protective mother or a punishing-rewarding father.

そこでは，神はすべてにおいて保護を与えるところの母なるもの，あるいは，罰したり報いを与えたりする父なるものとして経験されているのである。
