L0VE AND ITS DISINTEGRATION IN CONTEMPORARY WESTERN SOCIETY

愛と現代西洋社会におけるその崩壊

If love is a capacity of the mature, productive character,

愛が，成熟した，生産的な性格を持つ能力であるとするならば，

it follows that the capacity to love in an individual living in any given culture depends on the influence this culture has on the character of the average person.

いかなる文化の中にあっても，個人の生活における愛の能力は，その文化が平均的な人物の性格の上に与える影響に依存することになる。

If we speak about love in contemporary Western culture,

それゆえに，もしも，われわれが現代の西欧の文化における愛について語るならば，

we mean to ask whether the social structure of Western civilization and the spirit resulting from it are conducive to the development of love.

それは西欧文明の社会構造と，それから結果してくる精神が，愛の発達にとって役に立つものであるか杏かについてたずねることを意味する。

To raise the question is to answer it in the negative.

このような疑問を起すということは，消極的にそれに答えること。

No objective observer of our Western life can doubt that love--brotherly love, motherly love, and erotic love--is a relatively rare phenomenon,

西欧の生活を客観的に観察した者は誰でも，愛--兄弟愛，母性愛および異性愛--は，比較的にまれな現象であり，

and that its place is taken by a number of forms of pseudo-love which are in reality so many forms of the disintegration of love.

愛の位置は，その数だけの諸形態の偽愛によって占められていることを疑うことのできるものはひとりもない。現実には，この偽愛の形態とは，愛の崩壊の形態なのである。
