The practice of any art has certain general requirements, quite regardless of whether we deal with the art of carpentry, medicine, or the art of love.

我々の問題とするものが大工の技，医療の技術，あるいは愛の技術など，いかなる技術であろうと，その実践には，その種類とはまったく関係なくある一般的な要請が含まれている。

First of all, the practice of an art requires discipline.

第一に，技術の実践は訓練を必要とするということである。

I shall never be good at anything if I do not do it in a disciplined way;

もしも，それを訓練するに必要とされた仕方でしないならぱ，わたしは，その仕事に熟達した人となることはないだろう。

anything I do only if "I am in the mood" may be a nice or amusing hobby,

ただ，気が向いたからというだけで仕事をすることもよいかもしれないし，あるいはおもしろい道楽かもしれない。

but I shall never become a master in that art.

しかし，そのようなやり方では，その技術をマスターすることは決してできないだろう。

But the problem is not only that of discipline in the practice of the particular art (say practicing every day a certain amount of hours) but it is that of discipline in one's whole life.

さらに，この問題はある特定の技術の実践における鍛練（毎日一定量の時間をかけて練習することをいう）についてばかりではなく，人の全生涯における習練の問題でもあるのである。

One might think that nothing is easier to learn for modern man than discipline.

近代の人間は，おぼえこむためには，習練よりもやさしいものはないと考えるかもしれない。

Does he not spend eight hours a day in a most disciplined way at a job which is strictly routinized?

我々は１日に８時間を厳しく常軌化されている仕事の中で，もっとも訓練に適する方法で過しているのではないだろうか，と。

The fact, however, is that modern man has exceedingly little self-discipline outside of the sphere of work.

しかしながら，実際においては，近代の人間は仕事の範囲外ではほとんど自己鍛練の時を持っていないのである。

When he does not work, he wants to be lazy, to slouch or, to use a nicer word, to "relax."

彼は働かないときには怠けており，のらくらしており，あるいはもっとよい言葉を使えば，くつろいでいたいと思っている。

This very wish for laziness is largely a reaction against the routinization of life.

この何もしないでいることへの願望こそは，主として生活の常軌化への反動なのである。

Just because man is forced for eight hours a day to spend his energy for purposes not his own, in ways not his own, but prescribed for him by the rhythm of the work, he rebels and his rebelliousness takes the form of an infantile self-indulgence.

人は１日８時間，彼自身のものではない目的のために，彼自身のやり方ではなく，仕事のりズムに従って，彼に指示されたやり方で，自分のエネルギーを使うことを強いられるという，まさにその理由から彼はそむくのであり，その反抗は幼児的な自己放慾の形をとるのである。

In addition, in the battle against authoritarianism he has become distrustful of all discipline,

Without such discipline, however, life becomes shattered, chaotic, and lacks in concentration.

しかしながら，そのような規律なしには，生活は破壊され，無秩序になり，中心のないものとなってしまう。
