To be concentrated means to live fully in the present, in the here and now,

精神を集中しているということは現在に生きること，このところに，この今の時に完全に生きること，

and not to think of the next thing to be done, while I am doing something right now.

そして今，自分が何かをしている間は，次にするであろうようなことについては考えないということを意味している。

Needless to say that concentration must be practiced most of all by people who love each other.

いうまでもなく，このような精神統一は互いに愛しあっているほとんどすべての人によって実践されているにちがいないのである。

They must learn to be close to each other without running away in the many ways in which this is customarily done.

愛している２人は，慣習的になされている多くの方法に逃げこむことなしに，お互いに親密になることを学ばねばならない。

The beginning of the practice of concentration will be difficult;

精神統一の実践もはじめには困難であろう。

it will appear as if one could never achieve the aim.

それは，あたかも，どうしても目的に達しないものであるようにさえ見えるであろう。

That this implies the necessity to have patience need hardly be said.

それは忍耐が必要であることを意味するものであることはいうまでもない。

If one does not know that everything has its time, and wants to force things,

もし，すべてのものにはそれぞれに必要な時間があるものなのだということを知らず，事物を無理にしょうと思うようであれば，

then indeed one will never succeed in becoming concentrated--

精神を集中することには決して成功しえないであろう。--

nor in the art of loving.

また，愛の技術においても成功しないであろう。

To have an idea of what patience is one need only watch a child learning to walk.

どのような忍耐が必要であるかについての考えを持つためには，子供が何かをおぼえようとしているのを注意して見さえすればよい。

It falls, falls again, and falls again, and yet it goes on trying, improving, until one day it walks without falling.

児童は倒れ，また倒れ，そしてまた倒れるが，倒れずに歩くことのできる日まで試みつづけ，悪いところをなおしつづける。

What could the grown-up person achieve if he had the child's patience and its concentration in the pursuits which are important to him!

もし，成長した人間でも自分にとって重要なものを追い求める時に，児童のこの忍耐と精神集中とを自分のものとするならば，何ごとをも成しとげることができるであろう。
