Thus far I have discussed what is needed for the practice of any art.

これまでのところ，私はいかなる技術の実践にとっても必要なことを検討してきた。

Now I shall discuss those qualities which are of specific significance for the ability to love.

今や私は，愛する能力にとって特別に重要であると思われる特性を検討してみよう。

According to what I said about the nature of love,

愛の性質について私が述べたところに従えば，

the main condition for the achievement of love is the overcoming of one's narcissism.

愛が成熟するための主な条件となるものはナルチシズムの克服である。

The narcissistic orientation is one in which one experiences as real only that which exists within oneself,

ナルチシズム的な方向づけというのは，自分自身の中に存在するもののみを現実として経験することである。

while the phenomena in the outside world have no reality in themselves, but are experienced only from the viewpoint of their being useful or dangerous to one.

だから，その一方に，外部の世界に起っている現象は，そのような人たち自身の中においては，すこしも現実性を持たず，それらが人にとって有益であるか危険であるかという見地からのみ経験されるのである。

The opposite pole to narcissism is objectivity;

ナルチシズムに対する反対の極は客観性である。

it is the faculty to see people and things as they are, objectively,

それは人や物をそのあるがままに客観的に見，理解する機能である。

and to be able to separate this objective picture from a picture which is formed by one's desires and fears.

そしてこの対象像を欲望や恐怖によって形づくられた像から分離することのできる機能である。

All forms of psychosis show the inability to be objective, to an extreme degree.

あらゆる形の精神病は，客観的な立場を保つという点で極度にまで無能であることを示している。

For the insane person the only reality that exists is that within him, that of his fears and desires.

発狂した人にとってただ１つの存在する実在は，彼のうちにあるものであり，彼のおそれと欲望とである。

He sees the world outside as symbols of his inner world, as his creation.

彼は外部の世界を自分の内部世界のシンボルとして，また自分の創造物としてのみ捉えている。

All of us do the same when we dream.

我々のすべても，夢を見る時は同じようなことをしているのである。

In the dream we produce events, we stage dramas, which are the expression of our wishes and fears (although sometimes also of our insights and judgment),

夢の中では，我々は事件を作り，我々の欲望とおそれ（時にはまた，我々の洞察と判断である）の表現であるドラマを舞台にのせている。

and while we are asleep we are convinced that the product of our dreams is as real as the reality which we perceive in our waking state.

しかも，眠っている間は，我々のこのドラマの産物が，我々が目ざめている状態で知覚する実在と変りなく真実であると確信させられているのである。
