The lack of objectivity, as far as foreign nations are concerned, is notorious.

こと外国人のことに関するかぎり，客観性の欠如は周知の事実である。

From one day to another, another nation is made out to be utterly depraved and fiendish,

ある日から他のある日までの間は，他国民はこの上もなく頽廃的であり，しかも，残忍な国民だとされる。

while one's own nation stands for everything that is good and noble.

一方，自国民は善であり高貴であるもののすべてを表わしている国民だとされるのである。

Every action of the enemy is judged by one standard--every action of oneself by another.

敵のすべての行為は１つの規準によって裁かれるが，自分自身のすべての行為は，これとは別の規準によって判断されているのである。

Even good deeds by the enemy are considered a sign of particular devilishness, meant to deceive us and the world,

敵がなしたものであれば，よい行為であっても特殊な悪魔的なことのしるしとして考えられ，我々と世界をだますことを意味するものと考えられるのである。

while our bad deeds are necessary and justified by our noble goals which they serve.

しかも他方に，我々自身の悪行はやむをえないことであり，それも我々の高貴な目標に仕えるものだという口実をつけて正しいものとされるのである。

Indeed, if one examines the relationship between nations, as well as between individuals,

もしも，実際に我々が，個人対個人の間と同じように，国民間の関係を調べてみるならば，

one comes to the conclusion that objectivity is the exception, and a greater or lesser degree of narcissistic distortion is the rule.

客観性を保っているのは例外的なことであり，程度は大なり小なり異なっても，ナルチシズム的な歪曲があるのが現実であるという結論に達するであろう。
