In the same sense we have faith in ourselves.

同じ意味で，我々は，我々自身を信頼している。

We are aware of the existence of a self, of a core in our personality which is unchangeable and which persists throughout our life in spite of varying circumstances, and regardless of certain changes in opinions and feelings.

我々は，１つの自己の存在，変ることがなく，環境は変ってもそれにはかかわることなく，また意見や感情にはある変化がくるとしてもそれとは関係なく，我々の生涯を通じて持続するところの，我々のバースナリティーの中核の存在を知っている。

It is this core which is the reality behind the word "I,"

《私》という言葉の背後にある現実はこの中核であり，

and on which our conviction of our own identity is based.

そしてこの上にこそ，我々自身の同一性の確信がもとづいている。

Unless we have faith in the persistence of our self,

もし，我々が，我々の自我の持続性を信じないとしたならば，

our feeling of identity is threatened

我々の同一性の感覚は脅かされ，

and we become dependent on other people whose approval then becomes the basis for our feeling of identity.

そして我々は，自分以外の人びとに依存するようになり，その人の賛成がしだいしだいに我々の同一性の感覚の基礎となるようになってしまう。

Only the person who has faith in himself is able to be faithful to others,

しかし，自分自身を信頼する人のみが他の人に対して誠実でありうるのである。

because only he can be sure that he will be the same at a future time as he is today and,

なぜならば，そのような人のみが，未来においても自分は今と同じであろうと確信しうるし，

therefore, that he will feel and act as he now expects to.

それゆえにこそ，自分が，今期待しているように感じ，そして行為するであろうということを確信できるからである。

Faith in oneself is a condition of our ability to promise,

自分自身を信頼するということは，約束することができるという能力の条件なのである。

and since, as Nietzsche said, man can be defined by his capacity to promise, faith is one of the conditions of human existence.

それゆえ，人間はその者の約束することへの能力によって定義せられうるとニーチェはいったが，信頼は人間存在の１つの条件なのである。

What matters in relation to love is the faith in one's own love;

愛に関係していえる大事なことは，自分自身の愛を信頼するということである。

in its ability to produce love in others, and in its reliability.

すなわち，他者の中に愛を生ずる能力への信念であり，その信頼性である。
